My two youngsters are in college age, and it is not unusual to find that baffled and baffled, and the reason is normally the same: they are late with their statistics homework. I'm totally sure that the reason is due to a wrong approach to teaching stats. Being myself an educator, I can assure, with the concern of stating something wrong that I absolutely acknowledge the cause of the problem, and it really shocks me me that no one mentions it really. It turns out that kids in fact are not guilty of the massacre we can live at any considerable stats course. I mean, we have to be clear, many statistics classes are superficial, and kids don't demand any kind of skill to learn formulas and apply them. It is really easy to pass a class that way, almost with no dents, but you go figure what do they truly obtain something out of it. And then you find those that have to face some teachers that apparently imagine that their pupils are some kind of experts, and will designate an extreme amount of statistics homework. Youngsters sink afterwards. Why? I still haven't given the answer, right?The pure and transparent truth is that students are being screwed, because they are drawn to believe that they have learn and comprehend statistics as an standalone unit, when the is no ground to think a regular anthropomorphic being could learn statistics without going over a formal course in Probability Theory. It is as easy as that. It is impossible to comprehend the end of a tale without being familiar the beginning of it. And it this example, Statistics is final part of a tale that commences with Probability, and there is no chance of turning back the order or skim parts. I really wonder why the do it. I guess it is time to redevelop all these flashy academic programs, and put our foundations onto something more attached to reality.
