How long can the symptoms of flea allergy dermatitis last after the fleas are gone? (kitty still suffering!)?

It depends on what you are doing treatment wise, and whether the allergy is just to fleas.

Firstly, you need to make sure that EVERY FLEA is gone. So, vaccum the carpet thoroughly, wash all of the cat's bedding (and everywhere else it sleeps) using hot water. Keep reapplying anti-flea products for several months to ensure all the fleas are dead (the eggs can live in carpet for some time and keep hatching at intervals). Just one flea can set off Flea Allergy Dermatitis. If your cat goes outside fleas can live in soil as well (or be picked up from neighbouring animals) so be aware.

Secondly, are you using any relief medication? Some vets will give an antihistamine or steroid tablet prescription to use for the first week, just to get the cat over the worst while you get rid of the fleas. If you're using one of these the cat should be better in a day or so. If not, consider getting one. Being itchy (and scratching) can actually cause more irritation, leading to more scratching... it's a cycle. Drugs break the cycle and let everything settle down. Some cats will scratch so much they get a skin infection too - they need antibiotics.

Without relief medication (antihistamines etc) it can take several days to a week for itchiness to subside.

If things aren't getting better and you've tried all of the above, go back to the vet. FAD is the most common allergy, but there are others out there. My cat is allergic to dust mites and laundry detergent.totally agree with the above, well said!if you used spot on treatment , they kill fleas within 48hrs, if she has made herself really sore from scratching , it may take a few days longer, hopefully your vet gave her something to stop the itching, if not go back and get something.Some cats have allergies for months after getting rid of all the fleas. Try consulting your local veterinarian for topical treatments and try not to let him/her scratch anymore. Sometimes cat continue to scratch themselves even after the fleas are gone out of habit.
