What makes some heel turns work while others not so much?

depends how big the fans think the character isit depends on the acting skill of the personI think it all boils down to the climate of the business and the state of their career at the time they were turned or a turn was proposed

in Sting's case he was a mid card heel in UWF before JCP-NWA, I think that JCP over protected him as their new golden boy and the guy who'd be their "Hogan" after Flair left the problem is that Flair never really left and Sting became the other side of the coin... whenever a time came that he'd have made a good heel turn, other factors C***Blocked him (you can't deny that if Hulk would have stayed retired Sting turning heel to lead nWo wouldn't have been just as monumental)

Goldberg couldn't act his way out of a sack... the only way he'd have worked as a heel would have been in the 80's where he'd have been the Silent Brute with weasley manager and that era was gone before he ever debuted

Steamboat was from the era where people didn't switch almost ever... if they got 'stale' they just moved to a new territory and repeated their shtick for new fans with a new enemy... this is by no means an indictment of Steamboat, as he's a wrestling God, just a fact of the era... by the time he'd have been in position for a meaningful heel turn he'd essentially retired and crossed over into getting Legend pops and it would have taken something beyond major to get him over
