Suggest a good China travel guide BOOK?

Best answer:
I think it's actually pretty rare that Lonely Planet books get confiscated - I wouldn't worry too much about taking one with you. But as far as alternatives go, I've used the Rough Guides China guidebook before and found it pretty good. It looks like the new edition is coming out in a few months too. That's probably the best bet. The biggest problem with guidebooks to China is that they get outdated so quickly.for china, i think you might want to take a different approach to travel guide books.

1) China Survival Guide: How to Avoid Travel Troubles and Mortifying Mishaps by Larry Herzberg is very helpful for preparing for how to deal with Chinese culture.
http://www.amazon.com/China-Survival-Guide-Troubles-Mortifying/dp/1933330511

2) Niubi!: The Real Chinese You Were Never Taught in School by Eveline Chao is a much better phrase book than Lonely Planet's.
http://www.amazon.com/Niubi-Chinese-Never-Taught-School/dp/0452295564

3) CHINA: Portrait of a People by Tom Carter is a travel photography book that shows you with pictures some beautiful hidden villages you can go visit as where has some good street life to observe.
http://www.amazon.com/CHINA-Portrait-People-Tom-Carter/dp/9889979942

if you get all 3 of these, i think you will have no need for Lonely Planet anymore. people only think that LP is good because it is in all the stores. but in fact LP is one of the worst guide book series ever made because the writers don't really know anything. Lonely Planet is kind like McDonalds of guide books.
