Do you believe that much of our chronic illness is due to lack of nutrition?

Best answer:
of course! practically everything besides the organic produce section in your local supermarket has been show to give you cancer in some way shape or form! its scary to eat these days and our children grow up just thinking eating a bowl of count chocula in the morning for breakfast is a good start to their day! scaryDiet and lifestyle plays a role in some chronic illnesses, but to suggest that all or most our chronic diseases and illnesses can be cured and prevented by diet and nutrition alone is a composition fallacy. AltMed offers simplicity and by suggesting everything can be fixed by diet is easier than understanding the complexity of diseases and the fact that many different factors (including genetics) are involved, not just one. Now in some countries there is a nutritional problem and diseases occur as a result of this (e.g. scurvy, which results from a deficiency of vitamin C). Replacing vitamin C in the diet would rectify this problem.

Chronic diseases like Hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes can often be controlled and even prevented by a healthy diet and lifestyle, but this is more to do with the type of foods and quantity one chooses to eat and not the specific nutritional content.

Obesity has little to do with the quality of food, it's the quantity, however complex and refined carbs play a role in obesity, however it largely boils down to quantity.

There is no good evidence, that taking routine supplementation, on top of a healthy balanced diet is of any therapeutic value. The only time vitamins are of any benefit is if your body is lacking that particular chemical. The alties think that taking something, on the basis that it's good for you, is of value, this is emotional nonsense. Your body will take what it needs to you and store or eliminate the rest.

Now the alties have a way around this, they then try and tell us that food no longer contains as many nutrients as before, or simply because they don't think the food is as good as it was in the Garden of Eden! However, there isn't really any evidence to support this.

The problem with recommending supplements is that many people will use this an excuse to eat crap and just take vitamins. It's better to encourage people to eat a healthy balanced diet.

EDIT
@ Tony: can I have the links to the actual studies please.
==============================================
EDIT
To clear up any confusion, Tony; I added you because you and the other alties were whining about a question you posted that we didn't respond to immediately. I added you so I wouldn't miss any of your future airings, thus missing the opportunity to smack down your nonsensical claims.

With regards to refuting your postings. So what? I allow alties to add me, in fact I encourage them to challenge what I say. If what you are saying is correct, Tony, why do you care about anyone refuting your postings ? If your views are so weak and fragile that it cannot tolerate scrutiny, then you should question why you hold these views so strongly in the first place.

Also can I have the LINKS to the studies you quoted please. All I can see is the report, I need to see the actual study so I can see what exactly was assessed and how.

LOL and Dave for BA.absolutely, and in keeping with their widely known concern for the public health, the druggies are trying to get public access to food and nutritional supplements restricted...again.As well as the links asked for by Rhianna, I would very much like to see the links to anything that supports Beezusmahoney's claim that 'everything besides the organic produce section in your local supermarket has been show to give you cancer in some way shape or form! '.

In fact nobody knows the causes of cancer, and there is no food that has been proven to cause, contribute to or affect the course of any type of cancer - the exception being colorectal cancers, where a diet high in red and processed meat is known to be a major risk factor.

Yet the claim that everything but organic food has been 'shown to give you cancer' has received, at time of writing, four 'thumbs ups'.

So, Beezusmahoney - evidence please. And Tony -your comments?

Treat Diabetic Complications with the Right Vitamins

Article by Mario Carini

For those who have it, diabetes is akin to a death sentence. To others, it's meaningless until their doctor diagnoses them with the disease. It's worst effect is on those who are unaware they have it until the complications drive them to a life of medication and pain.

According to the media and the medical establishment, all you need to do is eat a proper diet and exercise. Unfortunately, this leaves out one key ingredient; supplementation. The food we buy at the grocer lacks essential vitamins and minerals. Further the pesticides and other treatments do nothing but add to the toxicity of the body.

Most of us in the developed world don't meet the requirements as set by our government health agencies. And those requirements are the minimum levels. Clearly we need to supplement before disease takes its toll. As a diabetic you lose far more nutrients through the kidneys than the average healthy adult. The kidneys, in order to rid the body of excess glucose, passes vitamins along with that sugar and out into the urine. To prevent neuropathy and retinopathy, you cannot rely on prescription medications. Supplementing will help you better avoid the complications.

It's the lack of vitamins and minerals that leads to the faster aging process that diabetics experience. Clearly what's needed is to replace what goes out and into the toilet bowl.

Some of the most important vitamins for the diabetic are: Vitamin C; E and B-complex. Besides these, vitamins A, D and K can also prevent the onset of diabetic complications.

But supplementing with vitamins are only the first step. For years you've lived a lifestyle that has brought you the disease and taking a few vitamins will not reverse or cure your diabetes unless you take a full approach to changing the lifestyle that has made you sick. That includes losing excess weight and exercising regularly. Taking vitamins alone won't help unless you take an active approach to your health.

If you are diabetic and want to avoid the complications so common, here are the essential vitamins that can help you stay healthier longer:

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a molecule similar to glucose and like glucose it needs insulin to get into your cells. Even if you take adequate amounts of this vitamin, as a diabetic you still have a deficiency of vitamin C. You need to take much more than the average person.

We all know that a lack of vitamin C leads to scurvy. But there's more to this important vitamin: Poor wound healing; less immunity to infections; excessive bleeding; elevations in cholesterol and a depressed immune system. Vitamin C is required for immune system function and the manufacture of collagen, the main protein substance of the body. Taking vitamin-C helps maintain the elasticity and functioning of the blood vessels and maintains proper blood pressure control. It has a mild effect on improving blood sugar control.

Supplementing with Vitamin-C is an absolute necessity for diabetics. A supplement of 2000 mg (milligrams) has been shown to reduce the glycosylation of proteins in the blood and helps avoid the toxic accumulation of sorbitol inside the cells. Citrus fruits are good sources of vitamin-C as are vegetables such as broccoli, bell peppers, potatoes and Brussels sprouts.

Vitamin E: This important vitamin acts as an antioxidant to protect against the dangers of damage to cell membranes and nerve cells. The delicate nerve cells in the eyes, hands and feet are particularly vulnerable to damage. With no feeling in the feet, infection can set it. In severe cases, amputation and blindness are the result. Vitamin E has been shown to prevent free radical damage from LDL, the bad cholesterol.

It improves the function of blood vessels and the cell lining.

It increases magnesium concentration within the cells and decreases levels of C-reactive proteins and other inflammatory compounds.

Vitamin E increases levels of glutathione which is important for the antioxidants within the cells.

It helps increase blood flow to the eyes.

Lastly it helps to improve kidney function and normalizes creatine clearance. Many diabetics suffer from kidney disease and the primary group on dialysis.

If you choose to supplement with vitamin E, make sure you use the natural form of the vitamin. Alpha tocopherol is the natural form of vitamin E. "dl-" is the synthetic form. Your body only recognizes the natural form.

Vitamin B-3: Niacin helps in the burning of calories and, like the mineral chromium, is an essential component of GTF (glucose tolerance factor) that helps move glucose through cell membranes. It has been shown to lower the need for insulin in type 1 diabetics, improve pancreas beta function and improve blood glucose regulation. The best form of niacin is inositol hexaniacinate which helps reduce fats in the blood and has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels by 18%, triglycerides by 26% and increase the good HDL cholesterol by 30% when 1800 to 3000mg is used daily. Both niacin and niacinamide make up an important part of the B-3 complex. Niacinamide plays a role in energy production.

Vitamin B-6: Also called pyridoxine, it plays a part in the chemical transmitters in the nervous system, red blood cells and prostaglandins. B-6 helps against nerve damage to the feet and eyes. Many diabetics are deficient in B-6 and a number of other essential vitamins. It also is beneficial for gestational diabetes, brought on by pregnancy.

These are the most important vitamins necessary and can help you maintain health and control your blood sugar levels. Take an active approach now before you experience the result of years of neglect.
